Horse Shelter

Horse Shelter – Dimensions, Price, and Everything You Need to Know Before Building One

Every horse owner needs to think about providing their horse with a safe shelter. The main options here are stables and horse shelters, which are a cheaper and more versatile alternative. Horse shelters can be set up in pastures or paddocks, providing the animals with protection in any situation. What are the sizes and types of horse shelters? And what else should you know before deciding to build one? We’ll explain everything right here!

The Function of a Horse Shelter

Horse shelters are one of the most popular solutions designed to protect horses from changing weather conditions. A horse shelter can serve as a place of refuge set up in a paddock or pasture, protecting the horse from the sun, rain, or wind. As a result, horses are healthier and less susceptible to disease. At the same time, a well-equipped and secure shelter can serve the same purpose as a standard stable, which is a much more complex structure and, therefore, more expensive to build.

Traditional horse shelters are very often open-sided, meaning they do not have fully enclosed side walls or are only partially enclosed. Of course, there are also shelters with fully enclosed walls. However, horse shelters, just like other structures agricultural—that is, agricultural and farm buildings—can be made of various materials, and their roof structure can be gabled, arched, or single-sloped.

Dimensions of a horse shelter

The correct dimensions of a horse shelter are extremely important, as they ensure the animal’s complete comfort and safety. According to experts, horse shelters should be at least 3 meters high, 3–4 meters wide, and 3–4 meters long per horse. This means that for a single horse, the minimum shelter area should be 9–12 square meters.

However, for a larger number of horses, the shelter’s dimensions should be increased to ensure they have adequate space:

  • For two horses, the minimum shed area should be between 18 and 24 square meters.

  • For three horses, it should be between 27 and 36 square meters.

It is important to note that a horse shelter should have very good ventilation and allow the animals to move freely; all of this is necessary for their health, comfort, and safety.

Types of Horse Shelter Structures

The design of horse sheds and, more generally, roofing for animal husbandry facilities, such as cowsheds, stables, and riding arenas, can be built using a variety of construction methods, ranging from traditional brick structures to wooden, metal, and plastic structures.

Technologies such as

  • arched structures
  • gable-roofed structures
  • tent-style structures

These types of structures allow for the quick and cost-effective construction of a horse shelter. Of course, it’s also important to ensure they are properly equipped so that they are fully functional. It’s worth noting that horse shelters—regardless of the construction technology chosen—can be significantly customized by selecting:

  • the type of material from which it will be built
  • the type of roofing material, e.g.:
    • single- or double-layer PVC material
    • corrugated sheet metal / trapezoidal sheet metal / metal roof tiles
    • roof panels
    • sandwich panels
    • ceramic roof tiles
    • concrete roof tiles

In addition, each shelter is custom-designed to accommodate lighting and water systems, a specific layout of fencing and stalls, as well as gates and other equipment, such as feeders and sliding stalls.

Price of a Horse Shelter

The costs of building a horse shelter are generally incomparably lower than those of building a traditional stable. For this reason, it is an extremely popular solution for owners of one or several horses. However, the final cost of building a horse shelter depends on many factors—primarily the shelter’s design and construction technology, the extent to which the walls are enclosed, its dimensions, and its amenities.
